How to Start a Modest Fashion Brand: From Idea to First Collection
Share
So you want to launch a modest fashion brand. You've got the vision — now you need to turn it into actual garments that real customers will buy. Here's a practical roadmap, from someone who's been on the production side for 6 years.
Step 1: Define Your Niche
"Modest fashion" is not one thing. Are you doing everyday hijabs? Luxury abayas? Modest activewear? The narrower your focus, the easier everything downstream becomes — from finding a manufacturer to marketing your brand.
Step 2: Know Your Numbers
Before you contact a manufacturer, have rough answers to these:
- What's your target retail price?
- How many pieces per style for your first order?
- What's your timeline — launch date, photoshoot, marketing lead time?
This isn't about having perfect answers. It's about showing a manufacturer you're serious. A good production partner will help you refine the details — but they can't help a blank page.
Step 3: Find the Right Manufacturing Partner
You have three options:
- Private label: Buy existing designs and put your label on them. Fastest, least creative control.
- OEM: Bring your design, the factory makes it to your specs. You control the product.
- ODM: The factory proposes designs based on your brief, you select and customize.
For most brand founders, OEM gives the best balance of control and practicality. You own the design, and a capable manufacturer handles the rest — fabric sourcing, pattern making, sampling, production, QC, and shipping.
Step 4: The Sampling Phase — Don't Skip It
A sample is not a formality. It's your chance to catch issues before they cost you real money. Expect at least one round of revisions. A manufacturer that can turn samples in 7 days is a strong signal — it means they have in-house pattern makers, not outsourced freelancers.
Step 5: Plan Your Launch
While production is running, you should be building your store, shooting content, and growing your audience. Production takes weeks; marketing takes months. Start them in parallel.
