How to Choose a Modest Wear Manufacturer: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Commit

Why the Right Manufacturer Changes Everything

The manufacturer you choose will shape your product quality, your margins, your delivery reliability, and your reputation. The wrong factory can burn months and thousands of dollars. The right one becomes the backbone of your brand.

Yet most brand owners choose a supplier based on a few photos and a price list. Before you commit, ask these ten questions — and listen carefully to the answers.

1. What categories do you specialize in?

A factory that makes everything usually masters nothing. For modest wear specifically, ask whether the manufacturer regularly produces hijabs, abayas, dresses, or sets. Modest garments have their own fit and construction requirements — loose silhouettes, modesty layering, and hijab-specific finishing — that general garment factories often get wrong.

2. Do you have an in-house pattern team?

Factories that outsource pattern making have slower iteration and less control over fit quality. An in-house pattern team means your revisions are handled by people who understand your garment end to end, without handoffs between studios.

3. How long does sampling take?

Ask for a specific number of days, not a vague "quick". A realistic custom sampling cycle is around one week for a standard style. Also ask what happens when details need clarification — will they flag it immediately, or start sewing anyway and hope for the best?

4. How is sampling priced, and what does the fee include?

Some manufacturers charge a sample fee that is credited back on bulk orders; others don't charge but quietly build the cost into production. Neither is wrong — but you should know which model you're in. Ask what the fee includes: pattern, materials, sewing, and how many revision rounds.

5. What is your MOQ, and is it flexible?

MOQ (minimum order quantity) tells you whether a factory fits your stage. If you're launching your first collection, a manufacturer with a modest MOQ — for example, 50 pieces per style, or 100 for hijabs — lets you test the market without over-committing. Our guide on why MOQs exist explains the economics behind them.

6. What is included in your price?

Ask for a breakdown: fabric, trims, labor, finishing, packaging, and labels. A low per-piece price is meaningless if packaging, hang tags, and quality checks are extra. Understand the full landed cost before comparing quotes.

7. Can you source the fabrics we want?

Modest wear lives or dies by fabric — drape, breathability, and modesty layering all depend on it. Ask whether the factory can source chiffon, jersey, modal, or whatever your collection needs, and whether they can provide samples of fabric options before you commit to a style.

8. What does your quality control process look like?

Any factory can claim quality. Ask specifically: is there a mid-production inspection? A final inspection before shipment? Who checks measurements and finishing? How are defects handled if they're found after delivery?

9. Who will I actually be communicating with?

This one matters more than it sounds. Will you deal with a salesperson who relays questions to production, or someone with direct access to the team? How quickly do they respond to a design question? Time-zone overlap and response speed during sampling are a preview of how the bulk order will go.

10. What are your payment terms?

Payment structure varies widely and is a legitimate business decision, not a red flag by itself. Understand the logic behind it: a manufacturer taking on significant custom costs — pattern, materials, dedicated production time — may require 100% prepayment on MOQ orders, while offering more flexible terms (such as T/T installments) for larger or long-term orders. What matters is that the terms are clear, written, and consistent with what they promise.

Green Flags vs. Red Flags

As you collect answers, watch for these patterns:

  • Green flags: specific numbers instead of vague promises; honest discussion of limitations; a named contact who understands production; willingness to flag problems before they ask for money; clear written terms.
  • Red flags: "no problem, we can do everything"; long silences on technical questions; pressure to pay before the brief is confirmed; prices that look too good without a breakdown; unwillingness to show samples or reference work.

How to Use This Checklist

Don't just ask these questions — compare the answers across manufacturers side by side. A factory that answers all ten specifically and honestly is worth more than one with prettier photos and vaguer answers.
