How to Prepare a Design Brief for Your Custom Modest Wear Collection

How to Prepare a Design Brief for Your Custom Modest Wear Collection

You've found a manufacturer. You're ready to start your modest wear collection. Then they ask: "Can you send us your design brief?"

If you've never prepared one, that question can feel intimidating. But a design brief doesn't need to be a 20-page document. It just needs to answer a few key questions so your manufacturer can give you an accurate quote and a sample that matches your vision.

Here's exactly what to include — and what you can skip until later.

1. Garment Type & Style Reference

Start with the basics. What are you making?

  • Hijab, abaya, kaftan, modest dress, two-piece set, sportswear, or burkini?
  • Any reference images? Pinterest board, competitor product photos, or a quick sketch on paper — all of these count. You don't need a professional tech pack to get started.

2. Fit & Silhouette

Describe the overall look and feel:

  • Loose and flowy? Structured and tailored?
  • Open-front abaya or closed? Everyday hijab or formal occasion hijab?
  • If you have a size chart or prefer a specific fit model, mention it here.

3. Fabric Preferences

You don't need to be a textile expert. Just describe what you want:

  • Light and airy (chiffon, georgette)? Soft and stretchy (jersey)? Structured and breathable (cotton, linen)? Silky drape (modal, viscose)?
  • If you have a fabric swatch or a photo of a fabric you like, attach it.
  • If you're unsure, say so. A good manufacturer will recommend fabrics based on your design and budget.

4. Custom Details

What makes this garment yours?

  • Embroidery or print? If yes, share the artwork or describe the design.
  • Labels and hang tags: do you want your brand name woven into the label? Printed on a hang tag? Both?
  • Packaging: standard poly bag, or something branded?

5. Quantity & Timeline

Be upfront about your numbers, even if they're estimates:

  • How many pieces per style for your first order?
  • When do you need the sample? When do you need production finished?
  • If you're testing a new market and want to start small, say so. A good manufacturer will tell you what's realistic at your MOQ.
